Why You Need Software Patents

The justification for software patents has been debated forever. Is it really necessary for new inventions of software to be patented, or is the award of copywriting sufficient?

To understand this you need to identify yourself with the software engineer or professional who burns the candle at both ends to create a software program. Unless he or she is assured protection against theft or patent infringement, why would they bother to apply themselves so single-mindedly to such tasks?

Why do so many people or companies apply for software patents? It is because once the software applications are released in the market, it takes next to nothing to reverse engineer it and re-create it to deliver the same functions.

If this happens, then the inventor stands to lose not only the credit from their new inventions but also the financial rewards that such patented trademarks would otherwise ensure.

It is obvious that software patents are essential. There is indeed no other way to ensure that the spoils of such inventions stay channeled to those who deserve to reap the rewards, i.e. the inventors.

Unless this assurance was available, nobody would be motivated to invest themselves into promoting the development of new technologies. However, in this day and age patented protection is guaranteed; therefore, the technology is ultimately made available for us all to enjoy.
