Windows Software Is Popular For PCs

MITS (Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems) of Albuquerque, New Mexico, was able to showcase their MITS Altair 8800 by being displayed on the cover of the January 1975 issue of Popular Electronics.

With no idea about the usefulness of these computers, this may be where Windows software began its journey. With a handful of visionaries that included Bill Gates and Paul Allen, they were among the first people to understand that the continued success of computing was in software.

Paul Allen resigned from MITS in order to join what would later become Microsoft. The first reference to this name was in a letter Bill Gates wrote to Paul Allen, in which he referred to their partnership as "Micro-soft," and later would become Windows software. In 1976, the trade name "Microsoft" was registered with the Office of the Secretary of the State of New Mexico and licensed officially "to identify computer programs" and data processing services.

An abbreviated timeline of Microsoft's releases starts in 1994 with the release of Windows 95. Followed by Windows 98 in June of 1998 and Windows ME in September 2000. Windows software continued to improve with the release of their Windows XP versions, including Windows XP Professional in 2001.

The current star, soon to be outdone with an even better one if Microsoft stays true to form, is the Vista operating system, which includes Windows Vista Home Basic, Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Ultimate and Windows Vista Business.
